Why was H&S Simulation and Resource Centre created?
Indoor workplace air quality plays an important role in workers' comfort and health. Poor indoor air quality can lead to headaches, fatigue, irritation, and other long-term lung diseases. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the current workplace air contaminant monitoring and sampling procedures are expensive and labour intensive. Without signs of air quality issues, testing is not performed until incidents occur, placing workers' health and safety at risk. As such, there is a need for a preliminary air quality analysis that can identify potential exceedance of air contaminant exposure limits. H&S Simulation and Resource Centre was created to meet this need using computational fluidic dynamics (CFD) simulations to predict airflow movement and determine air contaminant concentration in areas of accumulation.
How does H&S Simulation and Resource Centre work?
H&S Simulation and Resource Centre connects users to TinkerCAD and SimScale and guides them in creating CFD simulations of air flow in the workplace. TinkerCAD is used to create 3D CAD models of the floor plan of the facility. The model is then imported to SimScale to run the simulation and view the results. A user guide, tools, and templates have been created to assist users in using the software platforms. The diagram below shows the process flow of the solution.

Who was H&S Simulation and Resource Centre created for?
H&S Simulation and Resource Centre was requested by and created for Workers' Health and Safety Legal Clinic. Health and safety officers can incorporate the solution as a preliminary analysis of the workplace air quality in their inspection routine. Employees in chemical/manufacturing facilities can also be users to assess air contaminant concentrations of leakages. Users of this solution is not expected to have prior experience in 3D CAD modelling or CFD simulations; hence, this website contains resources to guide and assist the user.
